It felt like a trip into the Kill House we used for training urban warfare. I took point, Olly behind me and Barny as tail-end-charlie. Keeping close to the wall of the long hallway leading to the dormitory rooms of the younger children, I moved as if being hunted. The fluid grace, brought about by hundreds of hours holding weapon sights to my eye while moving, came naturally.

It made Barny curious. “What is it you do for a living, Lorne?”

“Are you going to ask me about my intentions towards your sister?” I shot back without turning. The lights in the hall seemed dimmer than previous trips down here.

“Just making certain you’re right for her.”

I snorted. “Like you’d know. I’m the one that gave her options.”

“I thought it might be wise to get to know you,” he said.

“Now isn’t the time for a catch up, Barny. If we get out of this alive, we’ll go for a pint, and we can judge each other’s life choices then. Right now, I need weapons and Olly has a stash.”

Silence until we reached some fire doors. “You’re familiar with weapons?” Barny asked.

“I’m a farmer’s son. What do you think?” I segued. “Hold.”

The order came without thought and I heard Barny mutter, “Farmer’s son my arse.”

I ignored him, wishing I’d brought Heather with me after all. Behind the double doors breaking up the long hallway, the lights flickered.

A small hand closed over the hem of my t-shirt. “That’s not normal,” Olly whispered.

I sucked in a hard breath and the smell of the wet dead drifted on the air, making it through the door seals. “No, it’s not. I’m still finding my way around this place. Describe exactly where your room is.”

Olly peered around me, looking through the safety glass. “You go along here, about half the distance we’ve already gone. Then there’s another set of doors off to the right and that leads to our dorms. It’s not long though, maybe ten metres. Another set of fire doors and the building opens up. It’s like this is the trunk and when we get to the room, that’s the branches of the tree. Each room is smaller as it goes to the top, where the common room is for our year. Our dorm is the first set because we share.”

“A Christmas tree design,” Barny said.

“Yeah, like that.”

I nodded. “Well done, Olly.”

“You think something is going to get us, don’t you?” he asked.

“I think that’s a distinct possibility.” For the first time, I realised my hands hadn’t ached for their usual array of weapons. Yes, I needed Olly’s catapults, but I didn’t need my firearms. It gave me a sense of pride in myself, like I’d grown as a person. Stupid grunt. Now is not the time to change the habits of a lifetime. “Yeah, well, you’re wrong,” I breathed out to myself.

Barny said, “What if fear is giving it strength?”

I frowned and glanced at him over my shoulder. “What do you mean?”

“It has to feed on
